The 2009 HomeAid Houston Playhouse attracted a lot of attention with its farm
house, country-style motif and whimsical décor, appealing to kids of all ages. HomeAid Houston is the charitable arm of the
Greater Houston Builders Association. HomeAid and the GHBA’s Custom Builder’s Council built the playhouse for HomeAid’s annual Project Playhouse fundraiser. The Houston Astros supported the project
for the third year in a row with the donation of space to display the playhouse
this past summer at Minute Maid Park.
A 10-foot by 10-foot “clapboard”-style structure, the playhouse included a pitched metal roof complete with
weather vane, split rail porch, “white-washed” interior walls and floor. This year’s house was named The Green Valley Playhouse. Creole Design, LLC’s architectural design was a farm house replica complete with dutch door, split
rail porch, window boxes and a weather vane. It was also built with a number of
green features, and the structure was modular to ensure easier transportation.
HomeAid’s Project Playhouse benefitted HomeAid’s mission: To build dignified housing where homeless families and individuals
can rebuild their lives.
The playhouse was built with donated materials, services and labor by GHBA
members. The CBC’s role in Project Playhouse was led by Joe Flynn of Cambridge Estate Homes,
president of the Custom Builders Association, and David Gordon of Whitestone
Builders. Project chair Stuart Feldman with Gulf & Basco led the HomeAid Houston side of the partnership.
Green Valley Playhouse was constructed in the Gulf & Basco warehouse just south of Minute Maid Park. Visitors to Minute Maid were able to check out
this fully loaded structure placed just a few yards inside the main entrance at
Union Station. The playhouse was kid-friendly and loaded with amenities
including A/C, operable windows, electrical supply, quality flooring, a flat
screen television, a Wii, DVD player, Astro’s memorabilia and theme-oriented décor.
